FAQ

Q What is MyCarProjects.net?
A

MyCarProjects.net is the best site on the Internet to keep a car maintenance log, gas mileage log, and project log for every car in your household. The site helps you stay organized, take better care of your car, and even show off your ride with a custom web page for every car. You can also read articles about car maintenance and modifications, and submit your own. The system will even e-mail you when it is time to have your car serviced.

Q Why is this better than using an Excel spreadsheet?
A

MyCarProjects.net will send you e-mail alerts when it is time to service your car. Also, your records will be available on any computer with Internet access, and you won't lose your records if your computer crashes. The customized web page for your car can be shared with others when it is time to sell your car, without having to pass files around.

If you still want an Excel file on your computer, that's no problem. You can log in and download your maintenance and gas records to Excel at any time.

If you're still not convinced, there will soon be a way to use Excel and MyCarProjects.net together. We are currently developing a way that you can keep your records in a spreadsheet offline, and upload your changes to MyCarProjects.net. Read about it and see a screen shot here. New: Due to popular demand, you can now download your Maintenance Logs and Gas Logs to Excel in the standard XLS file format. Note that these are not the files that can be uploaded back to the site, but are handy for people who like having a file on their computer.

Q How do the e-mail reminders work?
A

E-mail reminders are sent for a maintenance task based on the last time you performed the job. The reminders are based on both a due date and a due mileage. The system predicts how many miles you have on your car based on the last recorded odometer reading and the miles-per-year value that you give us. You will receive an "almost due" reminder when you are close to the due date or due mileage, and an "overdue" reminder when you reach the due date or mileage. You can also log in at any time and see the status of your maintenance reminders. The reminders are automatically cleared when you record another instance of the maintenance item. You can also clear your reminders on your maintenance log manually to remove the yellow and red highlighting.

Q How can I track my gas mileage with MyCarProjects.net?
A

On the Main Website

There are two ways to accurately track your gas mileage on the main site. The easiest way is to read your car's trip odometer and reset it at every fill-up. Write down the number on your receipt, which should also tell you how many gallons you purchased. Hint: you can use a key or a fingernail to write on most gas receipts, just like a pencil. Then, log in to MyCarProjects.net and record the date, the gallons, and the miles (and optionally, you can enter in comments and how much money you spent). You can also record your gas mileage using the beginning and ending odometer readings for the tank of gas, and the system will subtract the two numbers automatically. If you use this method, MyCarProjects.net will remember your last odometer reading and automatically enter it in as the "Beginning Odometer Reading" for the next tank of gas. MyCarProjects.net will calculate your miles-per-gallon for every individual tank of gas, and also calculate a "running average" that takes into account every entry you have in the system.

Below your log, you will see three tabs, each of them containing a graph. The first tab graphs your MPG for each tank alongside your running average. The second tab shows your price per gallon. The third tab shows your miles per dollar. By default, you will see your 20 most recent fill-ups on your graph, but you can change that value to graph as many fill-ups as you wish.

On your Mobile Phone

If you want to log your MPG right at the gas pump on your mobile phone, you can do that, too. If your mobile phone has web access, you can log your MPG on the MyCarProjects.net Mobile site at mobile.mycarprojects.net.

You can also log your MPG by sending an SMS text message from your phone. Simply send a text message to a special e-mail address with your miles, gallons, and money spent, and it will be added to your log. You will receive a text message confirmation when your entry has been processed, which will also tell you your MPG for that fill-up. The next time you log into the web site, it will be on your log and on your graphs.

Q Can I use MyCarProjects.net to sell my car?
A

Yes. Unless you have made your details private, you can use a link to share your car's maintenance log, gas mileage log, project log, picture, and any text you enter as comments on your "My Cars" page. MyCarProjects.net doesn't offer classified ads, but you can send the link to prospective buyers, or put the link on your eBay ad.

Q What is a "car project" anyway?
A

The project section of the site is for work you do to your car that falls beyond the scope of regular maintenance. Restoring a car, or modifying the suspension are good examples of projects, but since the system is so easily customized, a project is whatever you want it to be. Once you add your projects to the system, you can add a list of project items to each project. By adding project items, you can maintain a list of part numbers, prices, and links to keep track of everything you need. Simply check off each item after you purchase it, and check off each project as you complete them.

Q What's in the fine print?
A

MyCarProjects.net cannot be held responsible for any damage caused by errors in the software, or misuse of the software. Maintaining a proper maintenance schedule and taking care of your car is the sole responsibility of the car owner, and MyCarProjects.net is just a tool to make it easier. If you use the site in a way which we feel is inappropriate, we reserve the right to ban you from the site without notice. If you wish to sue the site for damage done to you or your car, you're barking up the wrong tree, because this is a free service, not a business, and we don't have any money.

Your e-mail address will never be shared or sold to another company. The only e-mails you will receive after signing up are the automated service reminders, and important site update information.
